Bruce McLaren founded his racing team in 1963 while still competing as a driver. He died testing a CanAm car in 1970. The team became one of Formula 1's greatest constructors under Ron Dennis. The F1 road car (1992-1998), engineered by Gordon Murray, set the production car speed record at the time. McLaren built the SLR with Mercedes-Benz from 2003 to 2010. In 2010 McLaren launched a dedicated road car division. The MP4-12C, 650S, 720S, and Senna followed a modular carbon tub architecture. The marque struggled financially through the COVID-19 pandemic, requiring emergency financing. New models like the Artura plug-in hybrid point toward electrification.
